BetterPoints is legitimate, but it is not a universal “pence per step” app. It runs sponsored UK programmes whose funders decide who qualifies, which journeys count and what rewards are available. If you live, work or study in an active funded area, it can be one of the more useful UK options. Outside one, the app may offer little or nothing to earn.
The verdict
BetterPoints is best viewed as local public-health and transport infrastructure with rewards attached. It is a good fit when your postcode, workplace or place of study qualifies and the current catalogue contains a voucher or charity you value.
The catch is eligibility and data. Local rules differ, campaigns can end, and tracked journeys may use GPS. Never assume somebody else's points rate or programme applies to you.
How BetterPoints works
A council, transport authority, NHS body, university, employer or other sponsor funds a programme. Participants join through the BetterPoints app, complete any registration or baseline survey, then track eligible actions. Depending on the programme, those actions can include walking, wheeling, cycling, public transport or a specific health challenge.
The crucial word is eligible. One campaign may reward a qualifying journey, another a weekly target, and another only issue entries into a draw. Limits, dates, verification and reward stock belong to that programme. There is no responsible UK-wide earnings calculation.
| Item | What it means | Main catch |
|---|---|---|
| BetterPoints | Balance redeemable against available vouchers or donated to charity | Award rules and catalogue are programme-specific |
| BetterTickets | Automatic entries into named prize draws | A ticket is a chance, not guaranteed value |
| Tracked activity | Verified travel or movement relevant to the sponsor | May require GPS and must meet local conditions |
Who can actually earn?
Start with the programme page, not the app-store page. Common gates include a qualifying postcode; living, working or studying in the area; an organisation invitation; a registration code; or membership of a target group. Some programmes accept commuters from outside an area using a code. Others do not.
After joining, open the challenge details and read the activity, duration, cap and closing date. An available download proves only that your phone supports the app. It does not prove that a sponsor will fund your steps. This is why BetterPoints should not be sold as paying everybody in Britain.
The 2026 West Yorkshire and Barnsley expansion
The current BetterPoints West Yorkshire programme is funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and covers all five West Yorkshire council areas: Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield. Its official guidance says residents can register by postcode, while people commuting into the region for work or study can use the published out-of-area code. Activities include walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport.
Barnsley is not one of those five West Yorkshire councils. Its 2026 BetterPoints activity belongs to the neighbouring South Yorkshire/Barnsley expansion and should be checked on its own programme terms. The practical message is positive: coverage is expanding, but the schemes are not interchangeable. A West Yorkshire offer, cap or invitation code should not be assumed to work in Barnsley.
Both examples show why local sponsorship matters. Public bodies are paying to encourage healthier, cleaner journeys and to learn how travel patterns change. Funding can produce better local value than a generic ad-funded pedometer, but only for the intended population and programme period.
Vouchers, charity and BetterTickets
BetterPoints can be exchanged against the catalogue attached to your programme. Options may include local independents, national retailers, services or charitable donations. In the West Yorkshire programme, official guidance states that 1,000 BetterPoints are worth £1. Treat that as a West Yorkshire programme rule, not a promise that every programme awards the same number of points for the same activity.
BetterTickets work differently. Completing the specified activity enters tickets into a particular prize draw; more tickets improve the chance but do not create guaranteed value. A headline prize such as a bike or trip should never be divided by your ticket count and described as earnings.
GPS and the location-data trade-off
BetterPoints needs enough evidence to distinguish an eligible walk, cycle or public-transport journey from unrelated movement. That can involve location, route, time, distance and motion information. The benefit is credible programme measurement; the cost is sharing a detailed pattern of travel with the platform for app operation and research described to participants.
BetterPoints' privacy statement says it collects details including name, email, year of birth, location and postcode, uses information to operate the app and support research, and does not sell personal information. It also says programme sponsors can use anonymised findings. Read the programme-specific notice because the sponsor and research purpose matter.
- Track only journeys you intend to submit.
- Review background-location and motion permissions on your phone.
- Do not assume “anonymised research” means no raw location is processed during classification.
- Use in-app help or the privacy contact to request deletion when leaving.
Who should use BetterPoints?
Use it if:
- You clearly qualify for a funded programme.
- The eligible journeys match travel you already make.
- You value the live vouchers, local businesses or charity route.
- You accept the disclosed location use.
Skip it if:
- No current programme covers you.
- You want passive rewards without GPS journey tracking.
- You need predictable national earning rules or cash.
