Strain is Bevel's answer to a simple question: how hard was today? Not how many steps, not how many calories, but how much total effort your body absorbed, in workouts and outside them. It is the score most likely to be misread, because people treat it like a step count they should max out. Bevel's own documentation says the opposite: strain is a budget, and Recovery decides how big the budget is.

The short answer

Bevel Strain is a daily effort score built from two parts: active strain from recorded workouts and passive strain from movement and heart rate during the rest of the day. It is usually read on a 0–100% scale, where 100% is framed as a high-intensity session, and it rises logarithmically, so the last few points are the hardest to earn. Your Target Strain window, set by recent Recovery, tells you how much of it to chase today.

What the Strain score actually measures

Bevel does not measure you directly; it interprets Apple Health data written by your Apple Watch. For strain, the raw ingredients are heart rate and movement. Active strain comes from sessions you record as workouts. Passive strain accumulates from everything else: walking, chores, a commute, a stressful meeting that keeps your heart rate elevated. Even on a day with no logged workout, your strain score is not zero.

That split matters because it separates Bevel Strain from a pure training-load metric. A hard gym session and a frantic day on your feet both count, because both cost your body something. How Bevel calculates strain

Bevel's help documentation describes the mechanics in three rules. First, strain builds from time spent in personalised heart-rate zones: more minutes at higher intensity means more strain, and longer sessions add more than short ones. Second, the scale is logarithmic. Going from 40% to 60% is much easier than going from 80% to 100%, which mirrors how physiological stress works: each additional hard minute costs more when you are already fatigued.

Third, activity values do not add up linearly. Bevel shows a strain number next to each individual activity, but a diminishing-returns function is applied when they are aggregated into the daily score. Two workouts worth 50% each will not produce a 100% day. This trips people up, but it is intentional; without it, anyone could inflate the score with volume alone.

One more detail worth knowing: although strain is typically read as 0–100%, Bevel deliberately does not cap it. Consistent high-level training can push a day above 100%. A century ride or a race day producing 110% is the system working, not a bug. Because heart rate is the main driver, aerobic sessions generally produce higher strain than strength sessions of the same duration, which is a known limitation of any heart-rate-led effort score.

Target Strain: the number that makes strain useful

A raw strain number tells you what happened. Target Strain tells you what to do. Bevel calculates a suggested window each day from your typical strain baseline and your recent Recovery scores, looking at roughly the last two weeks of activity. If you have been recovering well, the target moves above your baseline: your body can absorb more. If recent Recovery has been poor, the target drops below it.

Bevel also tracks Strain Performance, which is simply how consistently you land within the window over time. The honest reading is straightforward. Regularly finishing above target is a warning about overreaching. Regularly finishing below it means you are training less than your recovery could support, which is either deliberate rest or a plan that exists only in your notes app. Hitting the window most days is the boring, correct outcome.

How strain connects to Recovery and the Energy Bank

Bevel's three headline scores form a loop. Strain is the effort you spend. Sleep is how you repay it: a higher-strain day raises your sleep need. Recovery, calculated overnight from resting heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, SpO₂ and wrist temperature, is your readiness for tomorrow's strain, and it sets tomorrow's target. Chasing a 100% strain day while Recovery sits in the floor is using the app as a step counter with extra graphics.

The Energy Bank is where strain's cost shows up during the day. It combines recovery, sleep, strain and stress into a cumulative account that can carry over from one day to the next, unlike Garmin's same-day Body Battery graph. The high-strain-no-workout row deserves emphasis because it confuses the most people. Bevel's own copy says a stressful or unrested day can push strain up through passive heart rate alone. That is a prompt to look at Recovery and listen to your body, not a diagnosis, and Bevel is not a medical device.

Using strain in training without becoming its servant

Give the score a fair calibration period first. Bevel needs a couple of weeks of consistent overnight Watch wear before targets feel personal; a 12% strain day in week one is usually calibration, not a finished verdict. Once it settles, the practical habit is simple: check Recovery and Target Strain in the morning, train accordingly, then let the evening strain number confirm rather than dictate. If the target says push and you planned intervals, good. If it says ease off and you planned intervals, the interesting question is which one you trust, and being wrong repeatedly in either direction shows up in Recovery within days.
