Whoop is good for runners who want to know how hard to train tomorrow, and poor for runners who want to know how fast they are running right now. The Whoop 5.0 and Whoop MG have no GPS, no screen and no way to show pace, distance or splits on your wrist, so as a running device they depend entirely on your phone or another watch. What they do offer is the most polished recovery and sleep coaching in wearables, a Strain score that treats a tempo run and a long run as the different loads they are, and 14 days of battery. The verdict
Whoop is a recovery tool that logs runs, not a running watch, and it is at its best on a runner who already owns one. Pair it with a Garmin, Coros or Apple Watch and it becomes the layer that tells you when the plan is outrunning your body, which is where most running injuries start. Buy it as your only device and you will spend $199 to $359 a year to carry your phone on every run, squint at heart rate you cannot see, and trust wrist readings that independent testers still find erratic. Recovery-focused, injury-prone or already wearing a watch: yes. Want pace on your wrist or a race-day tool: no.
What Whoop is, in running terms
Whoop is a screenless sensor pod worn in a fabric band on the wrist or, with the Any-Wear bicep band or Whoop Body garments, on the upper arm or torso. It records heart rate, HRV, skin temperature, blood oxygen and movement around the clock and turns them into three scores: Sleep, Recovery and Strain. Strain is a 0 to 21 scale of cardiovascular load built from time in heart rate zones, so a 90-minute easy run and a 25-minute interval session can land near the same number while doing very different things to your legs. Whoop also estimates VO2 max, tracks heart rate zones, counts steps and, on the Peak and Life tiers, adds Healthspan, a Stress Monitor and Health Monitor alerts.
Every one of those numbers lives in the app and behind the membership. Nothing is shown on the band itself, which is a strength for sleep and the whole problem for running.
No GPS: how runs actually get into Whoop
The band has no GPS chip. You have three routes to distance and pace. The first is to open the Whoop app before the run, start a Running activity with GPS enabled and carry your phone; Whoop then records route, distance, pace and splits alongside heart rate and Strain. The second, on iPhone, is Whoop's Apple Health integration: if a GPS watch writes a run to Apple Health, Whoop imports the activity type, start and end times and the route, then layers in its own heart rate. Whoop staff confirmed in 2025 that this works with an Apple Watch and no phone, provided you do not also start the run in the Whoop app, because overlapping activities are skipped.
The third is Strava, which Whoop connects to in both directions, and Health Connect on Android, which imports activities, distance and calories. Two caveats: Whoop has no direct Garmin or Coros connection at publication, so those watches reach Whoop only via Apple Health, Health Connect or Strava; and Whoop's own community moderators have acknowledged that not every Health Connect field is surfaced in the app yet, with distance for some activity types missing from summaries in 2026. On iPhone the flow is dependable. On Android, check your first few imports before trusting them.
No screen: what you lose on the run
Nothing on your body shows pace, distance, elapsed time, heart rate or zone. There are no interval alerts, no lap button, no vibration when you drift out of zone two. During a phone-tracked run you can look at the Whoop app, fine on a treadmill and awkward at 6am in the rain. For structured workouts or racing, this is the deal breaker, not the price. Heart rate accuracy: wrist versus bicep
Whoop's 5.0 sensor samples at 26 Hz, a clear upgrade over the 4.0, and for steady-state running several reviewers found it tracked a chest strap closely. The picture is less clean at the edges. Wareable's Whoop 5.0 review recorded average heart rate on a seven-mile steady run at 159 bpm from the Whoop MG against 153 bpm from both a Garmin HRM-Pro Plus chest strap and an Apple Watch Ultra 2, and Whoop's own community forum has long threads from runners describing cadence lock, where the sensor reports 160-something bpm during an easy warm-up because it is counting footfalls, typically clearing after 15 to 20 minutes.
Moving the sensor to the upper arm with the Any-Wear band reduces motion artefact for most people, though some runners report a wrist-worn Garmin still beating their bicep-worn Whoop. What Whoop will not do at publication is pair with an external chest strap the way a Garmin, Coros, Polar or Amazfit Helio Strap can. Where Whoop genuinely helps runners
The recovery loop is the reason to consider it. Whoop's Recovery score leans on overnight HRV against your own two-week baseline, resting heart rate, respiratory rate and sleep performance measured against a modelled sleep need that rises after hard days. In a marathon block, that is the metric that catches a week of 15-plus Strain days on six hours of sleep before your calf does. Garmin's Training Readiness and Coros's recovery timer do a version of the same job; Whoop's coaching is more prescriptive and its sleep guidance more detailed. If the score sits stubbornly in yellow, Whoop recovery score always low runs through the usual causes.
Whoop also shows how a run landed: average heart rate, zone distribution, Strain contribution and how the night afterwards responded. It is retrospective analysis, not in-run guidance. Runners who train by feel get real value from that check; runners who train by pace and heart rate targets already have it on their watch.
Tiers and what running gets from each
Whoop sells three annual memberships, each with hardware included. Whoop One is $199 a year (£169 in the UK) for a Whoop 5.0, a wired charger and a CoreKnit band, and includes Sleep, Strain, Recovery, VO2 max, heart rate zones and coaching, which is everything a runner needs. Whoop Peak is $239 (£229) for the 5.0 with the wireless PowerPack, a SuperKnit band, Healthspan, Stress Monitor and Health Monitor. Whoop Life is $359 (£349) for the Whoop MG, which adds on-demand ECG, AFib detection and beta blood pressure insights. None of the tiers adds GPS, a display or chest strap pairing. Pairing Whoop with a running watch
This is how most runners who keep Whoop use it. Wear the watch on one wrist and Whoop on the other wrist or bicep. On iPhone, turn on Whoop's Apple Health integration and let the watch write runs to Health; Whoop imports them with route and pace and attaches its own heart rate and Strain, so nothing needs starting in the Whoop app. Garmin and Coros both write to Apple Health and Health Connect and both connect to Strava, which gives Android users a second path. The watch owns the run, Whoop owns the night and the morning.

Who it suits and who it does not
Whoop suits you if: you already own a GPS watch and want a recovery layer with better sleep coaching than your watch offers; you have a history of overtraining or injury and want a daily check on load versus recovery; you run by feel and want the numbers afterwards rather than during; or you value 14-day battery and not having a second screen on your body.
Whoop does not suit you if: you want pace, distance or heart rate on your wrist; you race and need splits; you follow structured interval sessions; you refuse to carry a phone on runs and do not own another watch; or you want to own your data outright rather than rent it. Does Whoop have GPS for running?
No. Neither the Whoop 5.0 nor the Whoop MG has a GPS chip. To get distance, pace and a route you either start the run in the Whoop app and carry your phone, or record it on a GPS watch and let Whoop import the workout from Apple Health on iPhone, from Health Connect on Android, or through the Strava integration.
Can you see your pace on Whoop while running?
