Whoop Recovery is a colour with a percentage attached. Green means the overnight data looks ready for strain. Yellow means moderate. Red means back off. The internet then invents folklore: ‘always low’, ‘green but wrecked’, ‘red after one beer’. Most of that is the model doing what Whoop said it would do, HRV-heavy, sleep-need-aware, unimpressed by how motivated you feel in the kitchen.
This page explains the score, then the Watch alternatives. It is not a Whoop membership review and not a Bevel glossary. If you already ditched the strap, skip to alternatives.
Short verdict: Trust Whoop Recovery as a trend against your own baseline, not as a moral grade. If you will not wear a strap 24/7, do not rent the algorithm, use a Watch app that says Recovery out loud. The numbers will differ. The decision (push vs easy) can still be the same.

The bands Whoop actually publishes

A 66 and a 67 are neighbours. Do not rewrite your marathon plan because you missed green by a point. Whoop has also noted that the member average sits well below 70, so a life of yellow is not a defect.
What goes in
- HRV: usually the loudest ingredient. Whoop has described RMSSD during the deepest sleep, compared with a recent personal baseline (often discussed as about two weeks).
- Resting heart rate: elevated vs you usually hurts Recovery.
- Sleep performance: hours you got versus a modelled sleep need (debt, strain, naps, personal factors), not versus a generic 8-hour poster.
- Respiratory rate: often quiet until it is not. A jump versus your night-to-night line is the story, not 14 vs 16 breaths as a universal law.
Strain is the other half of Whoop’s loop (how much you did). Recovery is how ready you are to absorb more. People who only stare at Recovery ignore that they stacked 18-strain days.
‘Always low’ and ‘green but tired’
Always low: alcohol, late restriction of sleep opportunity, a loose strap, illness, or a baseline still learning you. Also: you might just be loading more than you recover from. That is not a firmware bug.
Green but tired: soreness lags HRV; mental load does not always crash RMSSD; Whoop did not watch you stand in a kitchen until midnight. Energy-style scores and how you feel still matter. None of these is Whoop’s model in a Watch face. Optical wrist data, different baselines, different sleep-need logic. If you need Whoop’s number for a coach who only speaks Whoop, keep the strap.

Sleep need is why ‘I slept 7 hours’ still goes yellow
Whoop’s sleep performance is got versus need, and need moves with strain, debt and naps. Seven hours after an 18-strain day is not the same seven hours after a rest day. People who treat 7:30 as a moral victory will hate Recovery. The model is allowed to disagree with the calendar.
Watch apps that skip a sleep-need model (Apple’s Sleep Score uses your schedule and duration goal instead) will look ‘kinder’ after hard days. That is not proof Whoop is broken. It is a different question.
Do you need Whoop Peak for Recovery?
Recovery has been part of the core Whoop loop, not a boutique add-on. Extra stress monitors and coaching tiers change. Confirm the live membership sheet before you buy a strap to ‘get Recovery’. If all you wanted was the morning colour, a Watch app is cheaper than a hardware subscription, with worse sampling, which is the trade.
If the strap is already on your bedside table unused, you do not have a Recovery problem. You have a wear problem. No alternative app fixes a device you will not sleep in. Same rule as Apple Watch.

Why is my Whoop Recovery always low?
Common non-mystical causes: the strap moved, you drank, you slept short versus Whoop’s sleep-need model, you are accumulating strain faster than sleep, or your baseline is still settling. A week of red is a n=7 story, not a personality. If you feel fine and the strap is red for a month, check fit and sleep opportunity before you buy a new sport.
Why is Whoop Recovery high when I feel tired?
Recovery is autonomic overnight data, not mood. Poor sleep quality that the model still scores as ‘enough hours’, residual muscle soreness, or mental fatigue can leave you wrecked with a green badge. Believe your legs when they disagree with a percentage.
Can I get Whoop Recovery on Apple Watch?
Not the Whoop algorithm. Watch apps such as Bevel, Athlytic and Fitcoin Recovery use Apple Health signals and their own weights. They can feel similar. They will not match Whoop’s integer. See recovery apps without Whoop.
