HRV4Training is a morning ritual with a PhD attached. Marco Altini’s app does not try to be Whoop. You sit down, measure, tag alcohol or illness, and watch rMSSD against your own range. That is why athletes still pay for it, and why people who wanted a Watch complication uninstall it in a week.
UK search volume for the brand is still thousands a month even after a noisy three-month dip. This review is the dedicated URL so best HRV apps can stay a comparison.
Short verdict: Use HRV4Training if you will measure at the same time, in the same posture, most days. Use an overnight Recovery app if you will not. Do not run both and argue with the integers.

What you actually do each morning
- Pick one sensor and keep it: camera (finger on the iPhone lens), Polar-style Bluetooth strap, or Apple Watch Breathe.
- Measure after the loo, before coffee and training.
- Let the app clean RR intervals, compute rMSSD, and place you in your historical range.
- Tag context (alcohol, travel, sickness, hard session) so the trend has a story.
If you skip tags, you will call every low reading ‘overtraining’. Sometimes it was two beers.
The Apple Watch path, honestly
The Watch is not paired like a Polar H10. You take a still Breathe session so RR intervals land in Health, then you open HRV4Training and read them. Altini’s own writing: the Watch is accurate for that spot check; he does not recommend using Apple’s random night samples as the daily decision. If that workflow sounds like faff, you want Athlytic or Bevel, not this app.
You typically need to pull Health data soon after the Breathe session (his docs have long said a few hours, not tomorrow afternoon).

Who it is for
Yes: endurance people, coaches, anyone who already loved morning HRV on a chest strap and wants the camera as backup.
No: you wanted a Whoop colour on the Watch face; you will not sit still; you wanted sleep stages. That is sleep apps, not HRV4Training.
Where Fitcoin sits instead
Fitcoin Recovery will use overnight HRV versus your baseline as the largest pillar when the data exists, then sleep and load. It will not replace a 60-second morning rMSSD ritual, and it does not try to. If you love HRV4Training, keep it. What the app actually shows besides a millisecond
A normal range built from your history, not a universal athlete table. Recovery points (a friendlier transform of rMSSD). Advice that is conservative when you sit below your range. Tags so you can see that travel and alcohol explain more ‘mystery’ drops than your Tuesday tempo. Integrations exist to bring in other night HRV sources as context. They do not turn HRV4Training into an overnight Watch dashboard.
The interface is utilitarian. That is not an insult. People who wanted glossy rings already left for Athlytic.
Price and the habit problem
HRV4Training has long been cheap relative to Whoop. Confirm the live App Store price; we are not printing a number that will rot. The real cost is the minute every morning. Miss twelve mornings in a month and you do not have a trend. You have a guilt app.
If you already failed at morning journaling, failed at morning weigh-ins, and failed at morning meditation, you will fail at morning HRV. Install an overnight Recovery app instead of promising yourself you will become a 6am measurement person next Monday.
When to add a Polar strap
If you already own an H10-class strap, use it. Optical camera and Watch Breathe are good enough for consistency; a strap is cleaner if you fidget. Do not buy a strap solely because a forum said camera PPG is fake. Altini treats a still camera reading and a still Watch Breathe reading as usable. Fidgeting is the enemy, not the lens.

Yes, as a triggered measurement: sit still, run a Breathe / Mindfulness session, then ‘Read from Health’ in HRV4Training within a few hours. It is not an automatic overnight Whoop clone. Altini has argued that sporadic night Watch HRV is a poor decision tool.
Is HRV4Training better than Athlytic or Bevel?

Is the camera accurate?
Altini has published validation work on camera PPG versus belts. It works when you stay still, in consistent light, every morning. It fails when you fidget, measure after coffee, or switch fingers and times. Consistency beats hardware bragging.
Does HRV4Training pay you or coach workouts?
It is an HRV and readiness tool, not a rewards app and not a gym logger. Fitcoin is a different product: Recovery uses HRV as one pillar and still scores workouts for partner rewards.
