Best Sleep Tracking Apps for Apple Watch (2026)

Fitcoin fitness rewards app on iPhone and Android, with Sleep, Recovery and Energy

Most “best Apple Watch sleep app” lists are the same five names in a blender. Native Sleep, AutoSleep, Pillow, SleepWatch, then whoever paid for a backlink. The honest 2026 split is simpler: Apple now scores the night; extra apps exist for stages-in-the-headline, alarms, audio, or feeding Recovery. Hardware rings and “best sleep tracker watch” roundups do not belong here.

If you only wanted to know what Apple’s 50/30/20 score means, use sleep score app for Apple Watch. This page is the shopping list.

Short verdict: Default to Apple Sleep. Pay for Pillow or AutoSleep only if you will use audio or complications every morning. Pay for Bevel or Fitcoin if sleep is an input to training, not a hobby chart. Skip white-noise clones and 2022-dated “best iWatch sleep app” posts.

Disclosure: Fitcoin is our product. We are not affiliated with Apple, Garmin, Whoop, Bevel, Athlytic, HRV4Training or the other apps named here. Where Fitcoin appears, it is as a Sleep, Recovery and Energy companion that also scores workouts for partner rewards, not a PayPal cash-out app. Scores described below are wellness estimates for general fitness. They are not medical devices and they do not diagnose illness.

How this list is actually ranked

  • Must read Apple Health / Watch sleep, not a phone stuffed under a pillow as the primary sensor.
  • Must still be worth opening in 2026 after watchOS 26 shipped a native Sleep Score.
  • Hardware (Oura, Whoop strap, Eight Sleep) is mentioned only as a data source, not as a winner.
  • Snore-only and soundscape apps are out. Different job.

The apps, in the order you should try them

AppBest forWatch out for
Apple Sleep (built-in)Duration, stages, Sleep Score, no extra subscriptionREM/deep are charts, not part of the 100-point total
AutoSleepPeople who liked it before native stages existed; Watch facesPaying twice for what Apple now shows
PillowAudio snippets, sleep talk, smart alarmSubscription; microphone privacy
SleepWatchLong-time Watch users who want extra heart-sleep metricsAnother score to argue with Apple
BevelSleep as part of Recovery / Strain / Energy BankBevel scores are iPhone-centric; calibration weeks
Fitcoin (ours)SleepScore plus Recovery, Energy and workout rewardsNot a snore recorder; wellness estimates only

1. Apple Sleep: try this for 14 nights

Wear the Watch, charge it before bed, keep Sleep Focus. In the morning you get stages, time asleep and the native Sleep Score. If that answers “did I sleep enough, on time, without thrashing,” stop shopping. Everything below is optional spend.

2. AutoSleep: only if the native app feels thin

AutoSleep earned its reputation when Apple’s sleep story was a schedule and a hope. It still offers extra rings and complications. In 2026 it is a preference, not a requirement. If you already pay and like the faces, keep it. If you do not, do not install it because a 2022 Reddit thread said so.

3. Pillow: audio and alarms

Pillow’s job is the night as a recording: talk, snore snippets, a wake window in light sleep. That is a real product. It is also a microphone on your bedside. Read the permissions. Do not buy Pillow because you wanted a better REM percentage, Apple already draws the hypnogram.

4. SleepWatch: extra heart context

SleepWatch sits in the same ‘more graphs from Health’ niche. Useful if you like resting-heart trends next to sleep. Easy to turn into a second religion. One Watch, one headline score.

5. Bevel: when sleep is for training

Bevel does not replace the Watch sensor. It reads Health and prints a Sleep Score from time asleep, REM, deep, heart-rate dip, efficiency and continuity, then ties it to Recovery and Strain. If that loop is why you opened the App Store, read Bevel scores explained and apps like Bevel rather than treating Bevel as a Pillow competitor.

6. Fitcoin: score, then Recovery, then rewards

Fitcoin SleepScore is 0–100 from hours and stages when they exist, with a regularity nudge, and maps to up to 10 Fitcoin. The point of putting it on this list is not ‘another hypnogram’. It is that the same night feeds Recovery and Energy, and the day still scores gym work through FitScore. If you only wanted an alarm, this is the wrong aisle.

What to skip without guilt

  • ‘Best sleep tracker 2022’ posts and Series 3-era app lists.
  • Free soundscape apps ranking for ‘sleep app’ by accident.
  • Apnoea clones. Apple’s own notification feature and a clinician beat a £4.99 snore score.
  • Wearing two watches to make AutoSleep and Apple agree. They will not.

Who should pay

Pay if you will use an alarm or audio every weekday, or you want sleep inside a Recovery loop.

Do not pay if you have not worn the Watch for two full weeks. No app fixes a charging brick on the nightstand.

Permissions that actually matter

Sleep apps need Sleep in Health, usually Heart Rate, and often Wrist Temperature and Respiratory Rate if they score those. Microphone is only for audio products such as Pillow. A ‘free sleep tracker’ that wants Contacts or your whole photo library is in the wrong aisle.

Grant, sleep two weeks, then decide. Revoking sleep permission and reinstalling every weekend is how people conclude ‘none of these apps work’.

Android readers

This list is Watch-first because that is the query. On Android, Health Connect plus a wearable that writes sleep (Pixel Watch, Galaxy Watch, a ring) is the equivalent hub. Fitcoin SleepScore still runs there when stages or duration arrive. AutoSleep and Pillow are not your Android answer. Samsung Health’s own sleep coaching is.

Do not sideload an iPhone sleep APK. That is how people get malware labelled as a hypnogram.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sleep app for Apple Watch in 2026?

Start with Apple’s own Sleep app if you are on watchOS 26. Add AutoSleep or Pillow if you want a richer hypnogram, audio or a smart alarm. Add Bevel or Fitcoin if you want that night folded into Recovery and Energy, not just a sleep chart.

Is Apple’s built-in sleep tracking enough?

For duration, stages, a 0–100 Sleep Score and a schedule, yes for most people. Third-party apps earn their subscription when you want snore audio, a light-sleep alarm, or a score that weights REM and deep.

What is the best free Apple Watch sleep tracker?

The native Sleep app. Free sleep apps on the Watch almost always upsell, record audio, or duplicate what Apple already writes to Health. ‘Free’ that needs a microphone all night is not free of cost.

Do I need AutoSleep now that Apple tracks stages?

Less than in 2022. AutoSleep still has a following for its Watch-face complications and extra metrics. It is no longer the only way to see REM. Try Apple for two weeks before you pay.

Can these apps diagnose sleep apnoea?

No. Apple has a separate sleep-apnoea notification feature on supported watches. Consumer sleep-score apps are not diagnostic. See a clinician for suspected apnoea, do not buy a snore app instead.

Method and sources: Written 13 August 2026 from Apple’s Sleep Score user guide (watchOS 26 / iOS 26.2 bands), Bevel help articles on Key Terms and Common Questions, Whoop’s published Recovery explainer (green / yellow / red bands), Athlytic’s public Recovery and Exertion documentation, Marco Altini’s HRV4Training guidance on morning protocols versus overnight Watch samples, Garmin’s Body Battery description, and Fitcoin’s on-device SleepScore, Recovery, Energy and Immune Shield calculators.
