Apple Watch sleep stages are four colours on a night: Awake, REM, Core and Deep. That is the hypnogram people screenshot. It is not Apple’s Sleep Score, and it is not a polysomnography printout. The Watch estimates those bands from how still you were and how your heart behaved. Useful as a trend, easy to over-read as a single night, and not a diagnosis.

Short verdict: Wear Series 4 or later to bed on watchOS 9 or newer. Read REM and deep as shares of time asleep over two weeks, not as a verdict on Tuesday. Core being huge is normal. Apple’s Sleep Score can look High with thin REM, because that is the recipe, not a bug. Where REM actually lives
Open Health on iPhone, then Browse, then Sleep. Last night is a stacked bar: Awake, REM, Core, Deep. The Watch Sleep app shows a shorter version after you wake. You do not start a session. You wear the Watch, it writes sleep analysis to Health, and the chart appears.
No Watch on the wrist means no Watch stages. A phone on the mattress is a different sensor. A ring that writes duration but not stages will leave the hypnogram empty or borrowed. Mix sources and you will compare a Whoop night to a Watch night as if they were the same camera. They are not.
Which Watch actually stages the night
Sleep duration, asleep versus awake, arrived on watchOS 7. Four-stage scoring arrived on watchOS 9: Series 4 and later, SE, Ultra and newer. Series 3 stopped at watchOS 8, so it never got REM, Core and Deep. Charge it enough to last the night. A Watch on the charger at 1am is a truncated chart, not a mysterious loss of deep sleep.
Sleep Focus helps the Watch treat the window as sleep. It is not a magic staging switch. Wear it tight enough to sense motion, not as a tourniquet, with wrist detection on. If Health has no Sleep analysis for last night, no third-party app can invent REM.

Healthy adult lab nights are often discussed as roughly 13–23% deep (N3) and 20–25% REM of total sleep, with Core/light taking the rest. Wrist charts will not match that textbook, and they should not be used as if they did. Fitcoin’s own SleepScore, when stages exist, treats about 15–23% deep and 20–28% REM of time asleep as wellness anchors, with a softer curve at the low end because Watch deep runs shy.
What a normal Watch night looks like
Deep piles up in the first third. REM stretches toward morning. Core fills the gaps. That is why a 5.5-hour night often looks deep-okay and REM-poor: you cut the hours where REM lives. A 9-hour lie-in can look REM-heavy for the same reason. Neither chart is a character assessment.
Read shares of time asleep, not raw minutes, when comparing nights of different length. 48 minutes of deep after 5 hours is not the same story as 48 minutes after 8. Health’s stacked bar is the right view. A screenshot of one colour with no total sleep is how people scare themselves.
How accurate is Apple Watch sleep staging?
Apple validates against expert-scored polysomnography, not against your cousin’s Oura. The 2023 Apple paper reported a four-stage kappa of 0.63 in Apple’s own validation set. Later Apple materials on the 2025 algorithm (foundation models trained with Apple Heart and Movement Study data) talk about better quiet-wake detection and a kappa around 0.68. An independent 2025 six-wearable comparison put Apple Watch Series 8 at 0.53 against PSG, still the best of that pack, still only moderate agreement. Deep is the band wrist devices historically smear into Core.
In plain terms, the Watch is good at whether you were down. It is decent at whether that was REM-ish. It is least trustworthy when you screenshot 38 minutes of Deep and decide your nervous system is broken. Two weeks of the same Watch, same tightness, same bedroom, is the dataset. One Tuesday after pints is a weather report.
Why last night looks cursed
- Alcohol. REM usually takes the hit. Deep can look weird too. The Watch did not invent that.
- Short sleep. You cut the morning, where REM lives. The bar is honest.
- Watch loose, on the other wrist, or charging at 1am. The chart will look thin, and that is the sensor, not a mysterious loss of deep sleep.
- A nap off-wrist, then main sleep on-wrist. Health will not magically stitch a lab night.
- Comparing apps. Pillow, AutoSleep, Whoop and Apple will split the same night differently. Pick one hypnogram.
Sleep Score versus the hypnogram
watchOS 26’s Sleep Score is duration (up to 50), bedtime consistency (up to 30) and interruptions (up to 20). Stages sit next to it and do not vote. You can sleep 8 hours on schedule, wake twice, score High, and still show thin REM. A third-party sleep score that weights deep and REM will disagree on purpose.
Sleep by Fitcoin is that second look: last night as a SleepScore with the stage strip first, then the week if you want it. It reads sleep analysis from Health. It does not write sleep back. Sleep apnoea is a different Apple feature
On supported watches, Apple has a separate sleep-apnoea notification that looks at breathing disturbances. That is not this hypnogram. A chopped Core and Awake bar is not a diagnosis. A snore-recording app is not a clinic. If you stop breathing, wake gasping, or a partner says you do, that is a GP, not a new sleep score.
Consumer stage apps, including ours, are wellness estimates. They do not replace a sleep study. They also do not get more accurate because you paid for a subscription.
Who this is useful for
Yes if you already sleep in the Watch, you wanted to know what Core means, and you will use a two-week average instead of a mood.
Less useful if you wanted a snore recorder, a smart alarm, or a clinic. Overnight Watch wear is what fills the chart. If you feel unwell or think you have apnoea, that is a GP and possibly a sleep study, not a purple bar.

Does Apple Watch track REM sleep?
Yes on Apple Watch Series 4 and later running watchOS 9 or newer, when you wear it to bed. Health shows Awake, REM, Core and Deep. REM is an estimate from motion and heart-rate patterns, not an EEG.
What is Core sleep on Apple Watch?
Core is Apple’s name for lighter sleep (roughly the old ‘light’ bucket). It is usually the largest slice of the night. It is not a clinical stage you will see on a sleep-study report.
How much REM and deep sleep should I get?
Wearable charts often land around 15–25% deep and 20–25% REM of time asleep for adults, with huge night-to-night noise. Chase a two-week average in one app, not a perfect Tuesday. Alcohol, a short night and a loose Watch will move the bars more than a new pillow.
Why is my deep sleep so low on Apple Watch?
Wrist devices under-count deep compared with a lab. A hot room, alcohol, a late session or the Watch charging at 1am also flatten the bar. One low night is not a diagnosis. A month of collapsed deep plus you feeling wrecked is a reason to talk to a clinician, not to buy another sleep app.
Does Apple’s Sleep Score use REM and deep?
No. Apple’s 0–100 Sleep Score (watchOS 26) is duration, bedtime consistency and interruptions. Stages still appear on the chart. They do not get their own slice of that 100. A third-party SleepScore can weight them on purpose.
