If you already own an Apple Watch, you probably do not need Whoop; if you want a wearable whose whole job is telling you how hard to train tomorrow, Whoop is still the best at it. Whoop is a screenless band on a mandatory membership of $199 to $359 a year, and the Apple Watch is a general smartwatch you buy once, from $249 for the SE 3 to $799 for the Ultra 3 at publication. They overlap on sleep, HRV and workouts, and diverge on everything else: coaching, battery, notifications, GPS and what happens to your data. This page is the head to head. The verdict
Buy the Apple Watch if you can only have one device. Add Whoop only if you will act on a recovery score every morning. The Watch does workouts, GPS, payments, Sleep Score, Vitals and Training Load for one payment, and a $30-a-year app turns its overnight data into a readiness number. Whoop wins on coaching, sleep-need modelling and 14-day battery, loses on everything a screen provides, and charges every year. Wearing both works well on iPhone. Averaging their two morning scores does not.
Two different philosophies
Whoop is a sensor pod in a fabric band with no display, no buttons and no notifications. It records heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, skin temperature, blood oxygen and movement around the clock, then reduces all of that to three numbers in the app: Sleep, Recovery and Strain. The product is the coaching: whether to push or back off, how much sleep you need tonight, how your week is trending. The Whoop 5.0 is the standard band; the Whoop MG adds on-demand ECG, AFib detection and blood pressure insights, still labelled beta at publication.
Apple Watch is a wrist computer that also happens to be an excellent fitness tracker. It shows measurements rather than verdicts: heart rate, HRV as SDNN samples, a Sleep Score out of 100, overnight Vitals against your own range, Training Load over 7 and 28 days, and GPS workouts. It does not print a readiness percentage or tell you what to do with a bad night. Apple leaves that to the App Store, which is why Apple Watch readiness score has to explain that no native tile exists. A Readiness app spotted in watchOS 27 betas may change that, but at publication it is a rumour.
Price over three years
Whoop does not sell hardware; it sells a membership with a band inside. Whoop One is $199 a year (£169 in the UK) for the 5.0 with a wired charger, and includes Sleep, Recovery, Strain, VO2 max and coaching. Whoop Peak is $239 (£229) for the 5.0 with the wireless PowerPack plus Healthspan, Stress Monitor and Health Monitor. Whoop Life is $359 (£349) for the Whoop MG. Stop paying and the band stops working. Over three years the totals are about $597, $717 and $1,077.
Apple Watch is a one-off purchase. At publication the lineup is the SE 3 from $249 (£219), the Series 11 from $399 (£369) and the Ultra 3 from $799 (£749). Apple's September 9 event is expected to bring the Series 12 and Ultra 4 at similar prices, with no new SE this year, so check the current models if you are reading this later. A recovery app is optional: Athlytic Pro is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year, and Bevel Pro costs more. A Series 11 plus three years of Athlytic Pro comes to about $490, less than the cheapest Whoop tier, and you still own a watch at the end. The Watch battery will have aged by year three; Whoop's hardware is replaced within the membership when new generations ship.
Recovery and Strain versus Vitals, Training Load and Sleep Score
Whoop's Recovery is a 0 to 100 percentage built mostly from overnight HRV against your own recent baseline, with resting heart rate, respiratory rate and sleep performance against a modelled sleep need. Green is roughly 67 to 99, yellow 34 to 66, red 1 to 33. Strain is a 0 to 21 scale of cardiovascular load, and the app sets a Strain target each morning from your Recovery. Apple splits the same job into three views. Vitals shows overnight heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, blood oxygen and sleep duration, and flags when two or more fall outside your typical range. Training Load compares the last seven days of effort with the previous 28. Sleep Score, new in watchOS 26, scores the night out of 100 from duration, bedtime consistency and interruptions. Each is useful and none is a coaching verdict. If you want to be told what to do, Whoop is the more finished product; if you will read the measurements yourself, the Watch is enough.
How each one measures HRV
This is where most forum arguments start. Whoop reports HRV as RMSSD, sampled continuously and weighted toward your deepest sleep, so every night produces a comparable number. Apple Watch reports HRV as SDNN, taken as spot samples when you are still, during Breathe sessions and scattered through the night. The two statistics are not comparable, so a Whoop reading of 85 and a Watch reading of 45 tell you nothing about either device's accuracy. What matters on both is the trend against your own baseline. Sleep tracking
Both stage sleep into awake, REM, core or light, and deep, and both are estimates from wrist optical data. Whoop's advantage is not the staging but the framing: it calculates how much sleep you need tonight from your recent debt, today's Strain and any naps, then compares what you got against that need. Seven hours after a hard day scores worse than seven hours after a rest day, which is the right answer and the reason people call Whoop harsh. Apple's Sleep Score measures the night against your schedule and a duration goal, so it is kinder after big training days and better for fixing bedtime habits. Comfort favours Whoop: a 27-gram fabric band is easier to sleep in than a 42 or 46 mm watch, and it never comes off to charge.
Battery: 14 days versus a day and a half
Whoop claims 14-plus days from the 5.0 and MG, and the slide-on PowerPack included with Peak and Life charges the band on your wrist, so there is never a gap in the data. Apple quotes 18 hours for the SE 3, 24 hours for the Series 11 and 42 hours for the Ultra 3, with fast charging that takes the Series 11 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes. A Watch owner who tracks sleep charges during a shower or at the desk, and it works if you build the habit. The people whose recovery scores are full of holes are usually the ones whose Watch sat on the nightstand. Battery is the biggest practical difference between these two devices.
Workouts, GPS and daily life
Apple Watch has built-in GPS on every model, dual-frequency on the Ultra 3, live pace and heart rate on the wrist, custom intervals, Workout Buddy voice coaching in watchOS 26, and Bluetooth chest strap pairing. It also does the smartwatch jobs: notifications, Apple Pay, music, calls, Fall Detection and Emergency SOS. Whoop has none of that. It auto-detects activities and scores Strain and heart rate zones, but for distance and route it relies on your phone's GPS or on importing the workout from Apple Health or Strava. Exercise heart rate is close to a draw at steady effort, with Whoop's bicep band the more stable position for grip-heavy strength work. Steps favour the Watch: Whoop added them late as background health context, and counts commonly differ from a Watch by 1,000 to 3,000 a day, as does Whoop count steps explains. Data portability also favours Apple. Watch workouts land in Apple Health where any app can read them; Whoop's scores stay inside the membership.

Wearing both
A lot of people run this setup and it is less silly than it sounds. The Watch goes on one wrist for GPS workouts, notifications and payments; Whoop goes on the other wrist or the Any-Wear bicep band for 24/7 recovery and sleep. On iPhone, enable Whoop's Apple Health integration and Watch workouts import into Whoop with their route, so you never start the same run twice. Two rules keep it sane: pick one morning score to train from, because the two will disagree by design, and let only one device write sleep to Apple Health. The combined cost is the Watch plus $199 or more a year, so it only makes sense if the coaching changes what you do. The Watch is also what keeps open data flowing: Fitcoin, for example, reads workouts from Apple Health or Health Connect, scores them as FitScore and runs weekly Leagues for partner rewards, which Whoop's closed scores cannot feed on their own.
Does Apple Watch plus Athlytic or Bevel replace Whoop?
For the morning decision, usually yes. Athlytic builds a 0 to 100 Recovery from sleeping HRV and resting heart rate against a 60-day baseline, adds a 0 to 10 Exertion score with a Target Exertion Zone on the wrist, processes everything on device and costs $29.99 a year for Pro. Bevel uses a longer ingredient list, resting heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, blood oxygen and wrist temperature, and adds Strain, Sleep and an Energy Bank. What they cannot replicate is Whoop's sampling. A Watch that sits at 8 percent at 1am gives the app less overnight data, and no app can invent a night it did not see. Whoop's sleep-need model and coaching copy are also years ahead in polish. If you read a red score and actually swap intervals for a walk, that is worth paying for. If you would glance at the number and train anyway, it is not.
Who should choose what
Choose Apple Watch if: you want one device for training, notifications and payments; you run, cycle or swim and want GPS and live pace on your wrist; you refuse recurring fees; you want your data open in Apple Health; or you want ECG and hypertension notifications without paying the top Whoop tier.
Choose Whoop if: you want a coach rather than a dashboard; you sleep badly in a watch or forget to charge it; you plan sessions around a readiness score; you are on Android, where the Apple Watch is not an option; or you want a screen-free wrist and a normal watch on the other one.
