For years the most searched question about Apple Watch and recovery was a simple one: does it have a readiness score? As of yesterday, September 9, 2026, the answer is finally yes. Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 ship with a Readiness feature, a new Health Sensing System that measures heart rate every five seconds and HRV every five minutes, and a redesigned Health app with a Health Age metric coming later this year. This is Apple stepping directly onto Whoop, Garmin and Oura's turf. Here is what was announced, who actually gets it, and how it compares to the recovery and energy scores you may already be using.
The short version
Apple Readiness is a daily 0-10 score with four plain-language recommendations, and it only runs on the two new watches. The scoring itself looks solid, built on the Apple Heart and Movement Study and fed by far denser HRV data than any previous Apple Watch. The catch is the hardware lock: if you own a Series 9, 10 or 11, watchOS 27 will not give you Readiness. For everyone else, and for anyone who wants a score that behaves like a battery through the day rather than a single morning number, third-party apps reading Apple Health remain the answer.
What Apple announced on September 9
Apple's health and fitness announcement split into three parts: new sensing hardware on the watch, a new Readiness score that depends on it, and a Health app redesign on iPhone powered by Apple Intelligence. Here is each in turn, using Apple's own figures from the Newsroom release.
The Health Sensing System
Series 12 and Ultra 4 get new optical and electrical heart sensors with larger green LEDs, driven by the new S11 chip. The practical result is heart rate sampled every five seconds all day, and HRV measured as often as every five minutes, which Apple says is 24 times more frequent than before. Apple also splits HRV into two readouts: Recovery HRV for daily stress and recovery signals, and overall HRV for broader cardiovascular health. Apple cites a 1,000-plus participant study claiming the highest heart-rate accuracy across leading wearables. That is an Apple-run study, so treat it as a strong claim awaiting independent replication rather than settled fact.
The Vitals app gains HRV as a tracked overnight metric compared against your personal baseline, plus a new daytime view so you can see shifts before they show up in the next night's data. Readiness: the 0-10 score
Readiness analyses your recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep score, and produces a single number from 0 to 10 each day with one of four recommendations: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It. Unlike Whoop's Recovery or Oura's Readiness, which are essentially fixed each morning, Apple's score updates through the day as new data arrives, so a hard lunchtime session or a spike in daytime vitals will move it. Apple says the algorithm was developed with data from the Apple Heart and Movement Study alongside exercise scientists and physicians, and the interface shows which factors are driving the number.
Readiness lives on the watch, in the Fitness experience and in the new Insights tab of the Health app. It is available only on Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4.
The redesigned Health app, Longevity and Health Age
Arriving later in 2026 with iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 on Apple Intelligence-enabled devices, the new Health app adds an Insights tab that summarises heart, sleep, readiness, fitness, vitals and cycle data through the day, and a Longevity tab that looks at long-term trends across heart health, sleep, mental wellbeing, movement, metabolic health, hearing and nutrition. Inside Longevity sits Health Age, which uses VO2 max, resting heart rate, sleep, HRV and optional lab data such as A1c and LDL to show how your metrics track against your chronological age. It requires an Apple Watch.
Also new: at-home movement evaluations using the iPhone camera and Apple Watch to assess flexibility, strength, balance and VO2 max, processed entirely on device; the ability to order a 50-plus biomarker blood panel for $119 through Quest Diagnostics in the US; perimenopause and menopause support in Cycle Tracking; Workout Buddy working without a nearby iPhone; and expanded GymKit so AirPods Pro 3 can stream heart rate to compatible treadmills and bikes. The Health app redesign launches in US English first.

Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399 (42mm, US) and Apple Watch Ultra 4 at $799 (US). Series 12 keeps its 24-hour everyday battery claim, with up to 10 hours of outdoor workout tracking and 15-minute fast charging for 12 hours of use. Ultra 4 stretches to 25 hours in Extended Workout mode and 45 hours in the new Max Extended mode, which is 100-mile-race territory.
How Apple Readiness compares to Whoop, Garmin, Oura and Fitcoin

Where Apple's approach is genuinely strong
Two things stand out. First, the data density. HRV every five minutes on the wrist, with a specific Recovery HRV variant, is a real step beyond what any previous Apple Watch offered and beyond what most competitors sample during the day. Second, the intraday update. A readiness number that reacts to what you actually did at noon is more useful than a morning snapshot you have to mentally adjust for the rest of the day. That is the same philosophy behind Garmin's Body Battery and behind Fitcoin Energy, and it is good to see Apple adopt it rather than copy the Whoop model.
Where it falls short
The obvious one is the hardware lock. Tens of millions of Series 9, 10 and 11 owners have watches that already record overnight HRV, resting heart rate, respiratory rate and wrist temperature, and none of them get Readiness. Apple has framed this as a sensor requirement, and the five-minute HRV cadence does need new hardware, but a daily readiness score built from overnight data is entirely possible on older watches, as every third-party app in this space demonstrates. The second limitation is resolution. A 0-10 scale with four bands is easy to read but coarse. The difference between a 6 and a 7 is one of four recommendations, and the score's day-to-day movement will be small once you are in a stable routine. Scores on a 1-100 scale, whether Whoop's, Garmin's or Fitcoin's, give you more to work with when you are deciding between an easy run and a hard one rather than between training and resting.
The third is that Readiness does not tell you anything about what you earn from acting on it. That is not Apple's job, but it is the gap Fitcoin exists to fill.
Apple Readiness vs Fitcoin Energy: what is actually different
Fitcoin does not have a "readiness score". It has three related numbers that do the job Apple has bundled into one, and it reads them from the same Apple Health data your watch already writes.
- Recovery is the morning number: an HRV-weighted composite of last night's overnight data against your personal baseline. It is the closest equivalent to Whoop Recovery or Oura Readiness and it does not move during the day.
- Energy is the tank. It starts the day at a capacity set by your sleep history, your HRV and resting heart rate against a rolling 7-14 day baseline, and how much residual training load you are carrying. It then drains with each workout, with hours awake, and with long sedentary stretches, and it can recharge with a nap. It is a 1-100 depletion model, so an 84 at breakfast and a 61 after a hard session are both meaningful. - FitScore is what you did: a 0-20 daily effort score from steps and workouts that converts into FitCoin for partner rewards, streaks and weekly Leagues.
The practical differences against Apple's new feature come down to four things. Fitcoin Energy works on any Apple Watch that writes sleep and heart data to Apple Health, including the Series 9, 10 and 11 that Apple has left out, and on Android via Health Connect. It uses a 1-100 scale rather than 0-10. It separates the morning read (Recovery) from the through-the-day read (Energy), where Apple blends both into one number. And it closes the loop: when Energy says you have capacity and you use it, the resulting FitScore earns you something.
Where Apple has the edge is raw sensor input on the two new watches. Assuming Apple writes the new five-minute HRV samples and daytime vitals to HealthKit the way it writes today's data, third-party apps including Fitcoin will be able to read them too, which should make the autonomic side of Energy more responsive on Series 12 and Ultra 4. Should you upgrade for the readiness score?
If you own a Series 9, 10 or 11 and mainly want a readiness number: probably not yet. A third-party app will give you a comparable morning score from the data your watch already collects, for a fraction of $399. Wait for independent accuracy testing of the new sensors and for confirmation of what the new HRV data looks like in HealthKit.
If you are a Whoop or Oura subscriber who also wears an Apple Watch: this is the first Apple release that makes the second device genuinely optional. Apple's five-minute HRV and intraday readiness cover most of what you pay Whoop for, and the new Health app adds longevity tracking Whoop does not have. The remaining gap is Whoop's coaching depth and its screenless comfort in bed.
If you are a serious endurance athlete: Ultra 4's 45-hour Max Extended mode and the higher-frequency heart rate during workouts are the stronger reasons to upgrade, with Readiness as a bonus. Pair it with a load-aware app and you have a complete picture.
If you are buying your first Apple Watch: Series 12 at $399 is the obvious choice. You get the full new sensing stack, Readiness from day one, and everything third-party apps add on top.
