A recovery score is one number that answers one question: should you push today? Whoop calls it Recovery, Oura calls it Readiness, Garmin calls it Body Battery and Training Readiness, Fitcoin calls it Recovery. Different names, different maths, same idea: measure your overnight physiology, compare it with your own baseline, and compress the answer into 0 to 100. Short verdict: Every recovery score is the same three or four overnight signals (HRV, resting heart rate, sleep, sometimes respiratory rate and temperature) weighed against your personal baseline. Trust the direction, not the integer. Two platforms will never print the same number, and neither of them is wrong.

The question every recovery score answers

Training makes you fitter only if you recover from it. Push hard while your body is still repairing and you accumulate fatigue instead of fitness; back off when you were actually fine and you leave progress on the table. Coaches have judged this by feel for a century. Recovery scores are an attempt to judge it from data your wearable already collects while you sleep.

The core insight is that your autonomic nervous system leaks information overnight. When you are well recovered, heart-rate variability sits at or above your normal, resting heart rate at or below it, and breathing is steady. When you are carrying fatigue, fighting an infection, or metabolising last night's wine, HRV drops and resting heart rate climbs. None of these signals is decisive alone; combined and compared with your baseline, they are usefully predictive of how a session will feel.

The inputs, ranked by how much they matter

  • Overnight HRV versus baseline. The loudest ingredient in almost every algorithm. Suppressed HRV relative to your own rolling average (typically two weeks to two months of history) is the classic fatigue signature.   • Resting heart rate versus baseline. A few beats above your normal overnight RHR is one of the most reliable everyday signals of incomplete recovery, illness or alcohol.
  • Sleep. Duration always; quality and consistency in the better models. Whoop compares sleep you got with a modelled sleep need; simpler apps compare against a fixed goal.
  • Respiratory rate. Usually quiet. A clear jump versus your night-to-night line is an early illness flag more than a training signal.
  • Skin or wrist temperature. Deviation from baseline, used by Oura and some Watch apps as an illness and (for some users) cycle signal.
  • Recent training load. Some scores (Garmin Training Readiness, Fitcoin) also fold in how hard your last days were, so a brutal week drags readiness down even if last night looked fine.

Three things follow from that table. First, no two platforms will print the same number for the same night, because the metrics (SDNN vs RMSSD), windows (deep sleep vs whole night) and weights all differ. Second, the strap and ring companies bundle their scores with hardware subscriptions, while Watch-and-phone apps compute theirs from data your existing device already collects. What a low score actually means

A low recovery score means your overnight physiology deviated from your baseline. That is all it means. The usual suspects, roughly in order of how often we see them:

  • Alcohol. Even moderate evening drinking reliably suppresses HRV and raises overnight heart rate. It is the single most common cause of a surprise red morning.
  • Hard or late training. A heavy evening session leaves the nervous system elevated into the night. That is the system working, not failing.
  • Short or broken sleep. Obvious, and still the most fixable.
  • Illness. Recovery scores often sag a day or two before symptoms. A low score plus rising respiratory rate or temperature deviation is worth taking seriously.
  • Heat, late meals, dehydration, stress. Each nudges the same signals the same direction.

One low morning is noise; act on nothing. Three to five consecutive mornings below your normal is a pattern; that is when reducing intensity, protecting sleep and skipping alcohol earns its keep. And a low score is not an instruction to cancel life. An easy session on a low-recovery day is almost always fine, and often helps.

How to improve a recovery score (the honest version)

Because the score measures the physiological consequences of your behaviour, the only levers are the behaviours:

  1. Sleep on a schedule. Consistent bed and wake times, with enough hours, move every input at once.
  2. Cut evening alcohol. The fastest single improvement most people can make.
  3. Finish hard training and heavy meals a few hours before bed.
  4. Wave your training load. Hard days need easy days after them. Stacking maximal sessions is how you buy a week of low scores.
  5. Treat illness with rest, not with a defiant tempo run.

There is no supplement, ice bath or breathing app that substitutes for those five. Some may help at the margins; none outruns a nightly bottle of wine.

A quick detour: heart rate recovery is a different thing

People searching for a "heart rate recovery score" often mean HRR: how many beats per minute your heart rate falls in the first minute after you stop exercising. Apple Watch shows this after workouts, and a faster drop generally tracks with better cardiovascular fitness. It is a useful metric, but it is measured after exercise and reflects fitness, whereas a recovery score is measured overnight and reflects readiness. Improving your HRR is a months-long training outcome; your recovery score can swing tomorrow because of tonight's curry.

Limitations nobody prints on the box

Recovery scores are estimates built on estimates. Wrist and ring optical sensors are good but not ECGs; a loose band ruins the night's data silently. Baselines take weeks to settle, so the first fortnight of any platform is fiction. Muscle soreness lags the autonomic signals, so you can score green with legs that refuse stairs. Which recovery score should you use?

Whichever one runs on hardware you will actually wear to sleep every night. That rule beats every algorithmic difference. A Whoop in a drawer scores nothing; an Apple Watch you charge at 6pm and wear to bed scores every night. Beyond that: pick Whoop or Oura if you want dedicated 24/7 hardware and will pay the subscription; pick a Watch app (Fitcoin, Athlytic, Bevel) if you already own the device and want the score free or cheap; pick Garmin if you live in Garmin's ecosystem already.

Can I get a recovery score on Apple Watch without buying Whoop?
