Fitbit Sleep Score Explained (2026): What a Good Score Is, How It Is Built and Why It Goes Missing

The Fitbit sleep score is a 0 to 100 rating of last night's sleep, shown in the Sleep tab of the Google Health app, and a good score is 80 or above: Google labels 90 to 100 Excellent, 80 to 89 Good, 60 to 79 Fair and under 60 Poor, with most users averaging between 72 and 83. For years it was built from three parts, duration, quality and restoration; since April 2026 it is built from total sleep duration plus five quality metrics (time to sound sleep, sound sleep, restlessness, interruptions and full awakenings), compared against targets for your age and sex. The short version

Aim for 80, expect the 70s, and read the sub-metrics rather than the headline. Duration still carries the majority of the score, so the fastest route to a higher number is more time asleep, not chasing deep sleep. The score, its six sub-metrics and sleep stages are free on every current Fitbit and Pixel Watch, from the $99.95 Inspire 3 and $99.99 Fitbit Air upward; Google Health Premium adds coaching, not the score. Sleep Profile and the monthly animals were retired in May 2026. If you saw your score drop a few points in spring 2026, that was the algorithm change, not your sleep.

Where to find the sleep score in the Google Health app

Since the Fitbit app became the Google Health app on May 19, 2026, sleep has its own tab. Wear the device to bed, sync when you wake, open the app and tap Sleep. Tap Sleep duration and then Score to see last night's number, and use the Sleep duration and Sleep quality chips to switch between the metrics that built it. The week, month and year tabs give the trend, which is where the score earns its keep. On the wrist, Sense 2 and Versa 4 show the score under the duration on the Sleep tile; a Pixel Watch shows it in the Sleep card of its Google Health app; Charge 6, Inspire 3 and other trackers show the most recent session in the daily stats when you swipe up from the clock face. The legacy formula: duration, quality and restoration

From its 2019 launch until April 2026 the Fitbit sleep score was the sum of three components. Sleep duration, worth up to 50 points, was time asleep against your goal and age-based norms. Sleep quality, up to 25 points, rewarded time in deep and REM sleep. Restoration, up to 25 points, looked at sleeping heart rate relative to your daytime resting heart rate and how restless you were; a sleeping heart rate that fell well below your resting rate scored highly. Free users saw the total and the duration and quality parts; the restoration breakdown was Fitbit Premium only. The 2026 formula: six metrics and what each rewards

Google announced the redesigned sleep score on April 22, 2026, ahead of the Google Health app launch, saying it wanted the score to be more transparent and to reflect how people said they felt about their sleep. Six metrics now contribute, and Google's help page explains what each rewards.

Two ideas underpin the change. The five-minute threshold separates "awake", which you would remember and which disrupts recovery, from "restlessness", the normal brief transitions between stages. And "sound sleep" replaces the old fixation on deep sleep: Google now counts steady light sleep with a calm heart rate as restorative, on the basis that if it woke you during sound sleep you would know you had been asleep. Google warned that existing users might see scores drop several points during the transition and stressed that the benchmarks had not moved: 80 and above still means a good night. There is no way to switch back to the old score.

Score bands and what they mean

Google categorises scores by how users typically rate their own sleep quality: Excellent 90 to 100, Good 80 to 89, Fair 60 to 79, Poor below 60. With most users averaging 72 to 83, the honest reading of "what is a good sleep score on Fitbit" is that a consistent low 80s is very good, the high 70s is normal, and Excellent nights are rare because they require long duration, quick settling and almost no awakenings at once. A score in the 50s after a broken night is doing its job. Google's own advice is to focus on your personal best and your trend rather than the global figure or a perfect 100, and to trust how you feel over the number when the two disagree. Fitbit sleep stages: light, deep, REM and awake

The score depends on sleep stages, and stages depend on heart rate. Fitbit combines movement from the accelerometer with beat-to-beat heart-rate patterns to estimate when you are awake, in light sleep, in deep sleep or in REM. Google's guidance is that a sleep of roughly three hours or more with continuous heart-rate data is needed; shorter naps get a duration and a simple asleep/awake split but no stages and no score. Every current Fitbit and Pixel Watch with an optical heart-rate sensor produces stages, including the Inspire 3, Charge 6, Versa 4, Sense 2, Pixel Watch 4 and 5 and the screenless Fitbit Air; which is cheapest is covered in the cheapest Fitbit in 2026.

In the Sleep tab the stages appear as a hypnogram with the percentage of the night in each. Typical adult proportions from Fitbit's own population data are roughly half the night in light sleep, 10 to 25 percent in deep and 20 to 25 percent in REM, with deep sleep concentrated early and REM late. Deep sleep declines with age, which is normal rather than a fault to fix. The 2026 redesign also removed Sleep Sensitivity settings, the Estimated Oxygen Variation graph and, on Sense and Versa 3, snore detection; SpO2 is still tracked on the Health tab under Vitals.

Sleep Profile animals and Premium in 2026

Sleep Profile launched in June 2022 as a Fitbit Premium feature. After at least 14 nights of tracking in a month it analysed ten longer-term metrics and, on the first of the next month, assigned one of six animals: bear, dolphin, giraffe, hedgehog, parrot or tortoise, with the giraffe (short, deep, early-waking) the most common and the dolphin (light, short, often awake) the rarest by Fitbit's 2023 figures. Google did not carry it into the Google Health app. Its May 2026 notes state that Sleep Profile "will no longer be available and you won't receive monthly sleep animals"; Premium users are told to ask the Health Coach what type of sleeper they are instead. Historical Sleep Profile data was downloadable until July 15, 2026. So the Premium position for sleep in 2026 is: the score, sub-metrics and stages are free in the Base tier; Google Health Premium at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year (£8.99 or £89.99 in the UK) adds Personalised Insights, Targeted insights such as a suggestion to put the phone down earlier if time to sound sleep is consistently high, and the Gemini-based Health Coach, which Google itself cautioned at launch could give inaccurate details about sleep sub-metrics while a fix rolled out.

Why your Fitbit sleep score is missing

Google's help page is direct: to get a sleep score you need sleep stages, and if you did not get stages you will not get a score. The causes are the ones that break staging. The sleep was too short, under about three hours. The heart-rate signal dropped out because the band was loose, worn over a bone or on a tattoo, or the device was switched to a low-power setting. The battery died mid-night, ending the session early. You logged the sleep manually, which never produces a score. You edited the sleep log to extend it, which Google warns can leave gaps in stages and may produce no score or an unreliable one. Or the sync has not finished: the score can take a minute to appear after syncing. Accuracy versus a sleep lab

Polysomnography, the lab standard, scores sleep from brain waves, eye movement and muscle tone; a wrist tracker infers it from movement and heart rate, so it cannot match a lab and Google does not claim it does. Fitbit's own researchers published the most-cited validation in 2017 (Beattie and colleagues, Physiological Measurement): across 60 adults the Fitbit algorithm agreed with polysomnography on wake, light, deep and REM about 69 percent of the time epoch by epoch, with good total-sleep-time estimates and a known weakness in distinguishing light sleep from quiet wakefulness. That weakness is why wrist devices tend to over-estimate sleep and under-count time awake, and why the 2026 five-minute wake threshold matters. Google says its latest algorithm improved stage accuracy against gold-standard measurements across all compatible Pixel and Fitbit devices, but had not published the figures at publication. The practical conclusion holds for Fitbit as for the rings compared in the best sleep tracking rings: total sleep time and night-to-night trend are trustworthy; the exact minutes of deep sleep are not.

Quick fixes that actually move the score

Because duration carries the majority of the score, the single biggest lever is going to bed earlier, not a supplement or a cooler room, useful as those may be. Second is a consistent schedule, including days off, which shortens time to sound sleep and reduces restlessness. Third is what Google lists under sleep-healthy habits: being active in the day, limiting alcohol, caffeine and nicotine, and a wind-down routine. Alcohol in particular lengthens time to sound sleep and increases restlessness and full awakenings in the second half of the night, so it hits three of the six metrics at once.
