Fitbit Stress Management Score Explained (2026): The 1 to 100 Scale, EDA Scans and What Replaced It

The Fitbit Stress Management Score is a daily 1 to 100 number built from three categories, responsiveness (heart rate, HRV and, where the device has one, the EDA sweat sensor), exertion balance (recent activity) and sleep patterns, where a higher score means your body is showing fewer physical signs of stress. A score of 80 was a good day and a 60 an ordinary one; there were never official bands. As of May 19, 2026 the number itself has gone: the Google Health app that replaced the Fitbit app rates the same three categories as Resilience, shown as Optimal, Balanced or Low. This page explains how the score worked, what the typical values meant, which devices have EDA and Body Response, what Premium gated, what Google changed and how Fitbit's approach differs from Oura's Daytime Stress and Garmin's stress level. The short version

Higher was better, most people lived in the 60s and 70s, and the number has now been replaced by a three-word rating. Fitbit's score was a recovery-style metric dressed as stress tracking: it read overnight heart data, a week of activity and last night's sleep, and told you whether you had spare capacity today. Only the Sense, Sense 2, Charge 5, Charge 6 and Pixel Watch add skin-sweat (EDA) data; the Versa 4, Inspire 3 and Fitbit Air work from heart rate and sleep alone. The Premium-only breakdown of the three components is gone along with the number. How the 1 to 100 stress management score was calculated

Fitbit introduced the Stress Management Score with the original Sense in September 2020 and later extended it to the Charge 4 and 5, Inspire 2 and 3, Luxe, Versa 2, 3 and 4, Sense 2 and Pixel Watch 2 onward. Google's help page said more than 10 factors fed the score, grouped into three categories that still define the Resilience rating today.

Responsiveness. Heart rate, heart rate variability and electrodermal activity if the device has the sensor, used to judge whether the autonomic nervous system was showing fight-or-flight activity. Google now words it as "how hard your body has been working over the previous day to manage your physical and mental demands". Elevated resting heart rate, suppressed HRV and frequent EDA responses all lowered this component. Exertion balance. Recent steps, exercise and fatigue. Too much exercise and too little both cost points; the target was the middle, where the short-term strain of a session is balanced by the longer-term benefit of a week's movement. Sleep patterns. The amount and quality of last night's sleep and the past week's. Poor sleep lowers stress tolerance, and Fitbit scored it that way. Free users saw the single number and could log a mood against it. Fitbit Premium subscribers saw the three components broken out, each with its own sub-score, which is the "detailed score breakdown" Google's marketing referred to. To get any score at all you had to wear the device for a full day and night, walk at least 500 steps and have heart-rate tracking on; the tile lived on the Today tab of the old Fitbit app, and Pixel Watches never showed it on the wrist.

What typical scores meant: 60, 80 and the rest

Fitbit never published bands for the stress score the way it did for sleep or readiness, which is why "fitbit stress score 60" and "fitbit stress management score 80" are such common searches. What Google did say was that a high score suggests your body is showing fewer signs of physical stress, so you might take on a new project or exercise, and a low score suggests taking a break, going to bed early or meditating. From long-term user reports on the Fitbit Community and reviewer testing, the practical reading was:

The column on the right is our mapping, not Google's; the company has not published how the old number translates to the new labels. The direction is the important thing. Unlike Garmin, where a high number means high stress, Fitbit's scale ran the other way: a high stress management score was good news. Most regular users reported living between about 60 and 80, and the same behaviours that move readiness moved this score: alcohol, late meals, illness, hard training and short sleep pulled it down, while consistent bedtimes and moderate activity pushed it up.

EDA scans and Body Response: which devices have the sensor

The electrodermal activity sensor is what set Fitbit's stress tracking apart. It measures tiny changes in skin sweat, controlled by the sympathetic nervous system, through metal electrodes. Three implementations exist. The original Sense (2020) read EDA from your palm placed over the watch face for a two-minute Quick Scan or a guided session of up to 60 minutes. The Charge 5 and Charge 6 read it from your fingertips: you pinch the sides of the tracker with thumb and index finger and hold still for at least 90 seconds while the EDA Scan app counts responses and logs heart rate before and after. The Sense 2 and Pixel Watch 2, 3, 4 and 5 carry a continuous EDA (cEDA) sensor that runs all day and, combined with heart rate, HRV and skin temperature, powers Body Response notifications: roughly ten minutes after the watch detects a sudden rise in fight-or-flight activity it asks you to log a mood, then offers a Relax breathing session or a walk. Google is explicit that Body Responses flag sudden autonomic spikes, which can come from public speaking, standing up quickly, caffeine, eating or the start of an illness, and are not a measure of overall stress.

Devices without any EDA hardware still produce a stress or Resilience rating from heart rate, HRV, activity and sleep: the Versa 4, Inspire 2 and 3, Luxe, Charge 4, Versa 2 and 3 and the 2026 Fitbit Air all appear on Google's compatibility list. The Sense 2 remains the only Fitbit-branded device with both continuous EDA and Body Response, which is why it is still sold at $249.95 and why our cheapest Fitbit guide calls it the pick for stress tracking specifically. One 2026 caveat: Google says EDA scans on the Charge 5, Charge 6 and original Sense now stay on the device. The scan still runs, renamed Scan Quick Reset in Google's notes, but results no longer sync to the phone and the historical graphs of stress checks were removed from the app. Body Response data on Sense 2 and Pixel Watch does still sync and is shown against your logged moods on a daily timeline.

What Google changed in May 2026: Resilience replaces the number

When the Fitbit app became the Google Health app on May 19, 2026, Google renamed Health Metrics to Vitals, Menstrual Health to Cycle Health and, in its own words, "Resilience replaces Stress score", described as Optimal, Balanced or Low instead of a numerical value. To see it, open the app, tap the Health tab, and under Focus areas tap Mental wellbeing, where Mindfulness, Body responses and Resilience sit together. Tap Resilience for day, week, month, three-month and year views. Google distinguishes it from readiness: readiness gauges recovery, Resilience measures your capacity to handle and bounce back from physical and mental strain. In practice the two often agree, since they read overlapping signals; the difference is that Resilience folds in EDA where available and weighs yesterday's demands more heavily.

The Premium picture also changed. There is no longer a paid breakdown to unlock because there is no numeric score to break down; Resilience and Body Responses are in the free Base tier of the Google Health app, and Google Health Premium at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year (£8.99 or £89.99 in the UK) adds a curated mindfulness library with sessions such as "Calm your worries" and "Ready and resilient meditation", plus the Gemini-based Health Coach that can be asked about stress trends. Data tied to the retired stress score was available to download or delete until July 15, 2026. Fitbit stress versus Oura Daytime Stress and Garmin stress

The three big consumer approaches measure different things and are easy to confuse. Fitbit (and now Google Health Resilience) is a once-a-day capacity rating computed mainly from overnight data: it tells you how much stress you can absorb today. Garmin stress is a continuous 0 to 100 level updated through the day from HRV, using Firstbeat analytics, where higher means more stressed: 0 to 25 is Rest, 26 to 50 Low, 51 to 75 Medium and 76 to 100 High. It reads a hard commute or a heated meeting in near real time and feeds Garmin's Body Battery, whose Apple Watch equivalents are compared in Apple Watch Body Battery alternatives. Oura Daytime Stress, launched in 2023 for Gen3 and later Oura Ring 4, plots the day in 15-minute blocks as Stressed, Engaged, Relaxed or Restored using heart rate, HRV, skin temperature and movement, and adds a separate multi-week Resilience level from Limited to Exceptional.

The practical differences: Garmin and Oura show you stress as it happens, Fitbit summarises it each morning. Fitbit's continuous EDA on Sense 2 and Pixel Watch is the only mainstream sensor that reads sweat rather than inferring stress from heart rate alone, but Google surfaces it as event notifications rather than a graph. Garmin's number rises for exercise and excitement as well as anxiety, which is why it is labelled stress rather than anxiety. None of the three has been validated against clinical measures of psychological stress, and none can tell good stress from bad. How to act on a low stress or Resilience reading

Google's own advice list is modest and sound: regular exercise, a consistent bedtime with at least seven hours of sleep, a relaxing activity such as breathing or meditation, and deciding what actually has to be done today. The Relax app on most Fitbit devices runs a two or five-minute paced-breathing session calibrated to your HRV, and logging a mood after a Body Response builds a timeline that shows which situations actually spike your nervous system. The trap is treating a Low rating as a reason to cancel everything. A single Low day after a race, a late flight or a bad night is expected. On the 1 to 100 scale a 60 was an ordinary, slightly-below-your-best day: your body was showing some physical signs of strain from heart rate, exertion or sleep, but nothing Fitbit flagged as a problem. Is a Fitbit stress management score of 80 good?

Yes. Higher is better on Fitbit's scale, the opposite of Garmin, and 80 or above meant your body was showing few physical signs of stress: HRV in your normal range, resting heart rate steady, activity balanced and sleep adequate. Fitbit's own guidance for a high score was that it might be the day to take on a big project or a hard workout. Scores in the 90s were uncommon and usually followed several good nights of sleep and a rest day.

Which Fitbit devices have the EDA stress sensor?

Three families. The original Sense (2020) and the Sense 2 (2022) have EDA electrodes in the case; the Sense 2 adds a continuous EDA sensor that powers Body Response notifications. The Charge 5 and Charge 6 have electrodes on the sides of the tracker for on-demand EDA scans taken with your thumb and finger. Pixel Watch 2, 3, 4 and 5 have continuous EDA and Body Response. The Versa 4, Inspire 3, Luxe and Fitbit Air have no EDA sensor and build their stress or Resilience rating from heart rate, HRV, activity and sleep alone.

Where did the Fitbit stress management score go?

When the Fitbit app became the Google Health app on May 19, 2026, Google replaced the numerical Stress Management Score with a Resilience rating of Optimal, Balanced or Low, found under Health, then Focus areas, then Mental wellbeing. The three underlying categories, responsiveness, exertion balance and sleep patterns, are unchanged.
