Athlytic if you already wear an Apple Watch overnight and you want the morning number for about $30 a year. Whoop if you want a screenless strap that stays on for two weeks and you will actually change training because of it. They print a recovery score and a strain-style load. They are not substitutes. Athlytic reads the Watch you own. Whoop is a membership that includes the sensor. Since Apple put Readiness on Series 12 and Ultra 4 in September 2026, the expensive strap is a harder sell for anyone buying a new Watch anyway.
The Watch-versus-Watch fork is Bevel vs Athlytic. The strap-versus-Watch fork is Whoop vs Apple Watch. Whether the membership still earns its fee is is Whoop worth it in 2026.
Short verdict: Stay on Athlytic if the Watch is already on your wrist at night and a Target Exertion Zone is enough. Pay for Whoop if you refuse a screen, you want 14-day wear, and you will follow Strain. Do not pay for both. Do not expect the percentages to match.

Different jobs
Athlytic's morning Recovery is a 0 to 100 percent score from sleeping HRV and sleeping resting heart rate, set against your own rough 60-day baseline. Exertion runs 0 to 10 from time above a personal heart-rate threshold, with a Target Exertion Zone tied to that morning. Sleep charts, a 24/7 range monitor and Watch complications are the rest of the product. The full review is Athlytic.
Whoop's job is the strap. Recovery, Strain and Sleep are sampled on a band you can leave on, charged on the wrist, with coaching written as an instruction rather than a dashboard. US memberships we have been quoting through 2026 are about $199 a year for One, $239 for Peak and $359 for Life. The hardware is not a separate purchase you keep if you cancel. Stop paying and the sensor goes dark. How the colours are built is in Whoop recovery explained.
What Series 12 changed
On 9 September 2026 Apple put Readiness on Series 12 and Ultra 4, with denser HRV sampling and a Health Age view, and no annual fee for those scores. That does not make Athlytic or Whoop identical to Apple. Athlytic's Exertion loop is still a training tool Apple does not copy one-for-one. Whoop's Strain coach and always-on band are still a different object. It does mean a new-Watch buyer should not pay $199 a year only to be told whether yesterday was hard. Older Watches still have no first-party Readiness. That is why readiness on an older Apple Watch is a software question, and Athlytic is one of the answers.

Why Tuesday will not match
Athlytic can drift after breakfast because Apple Health stores one daily resting-heart-rate sample and may update it later. Their own notes say to let the app write sleeping RHR if you want the morning number to sit still. Whoop does not have that Apple quirk, and it does have temperature in the recipe. A 71 in Athlytic and a yellow in Whoop on the same morning is normal. Train on one of them. The other is a second opinion you did not ask for.
Who should pay
- Athlytic Pro if two free weeks already changed a session and you want history longer than the short free window.
- Whoop if you will not sleep in a Watch, you want the band on for 14 days, and you have cancelled subscriptions you do not use. If you will not change Tuesday, you will not get the fee back.
- Neither extra app if you are buying Series 12 or Ultra 4 and Apple's Readiness is the only sentence you wanted. Confirm the live watchOS version before you assume older models grew the same score.
- Bevel if you wanted nutrition, strength and Energy Bank. That comparison is Bevel vs Whoop.
Frequently asked questions
Is Athlytic as good as Whoop?
For a person who already wears an Apple Watch overnight, Athlytic covers the morning recovery question and a daily exertion target for about $30 a year. It is not as good as Whoop if you wanted a screenless 14-day strap, temperature in the score, or Android. The integers will not match because the sensors and the recipes do not match.
Do I still need Whoop if I have an Apple Watch Series 12?
Not for a basic readiness sentence. Series 12 and Ultra 4 have Apple's own Readiness score without a membership. Whoop is still the better tool if you want a screenless band and Strain coaching you will follow. Athlytic is the cheaper tool if you want a tighter exertion loop than Apple ships.
How much does Athlytic cost versus Whoop?
Athlytic is free to try. Pro is listed at $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year. Whoop memberships in the US run about $199 a year for One, $239 for Peak and $359 for Life, and the band stops working if you cancel. Over three years that is about $90 against $597 or more.
Does Athlytic work on Android?
No. Athlytic is an iPhone and Apple Watch app. Whoop has an Android app and its own strap. A Galaxy Watch user is not choosing between these two.
Method and sources: Written 21 September 2026 from Athlytic's public pricing and recovery notes (sleeping HRV and RHR versus about a 60-day baseline, Exertion 0 to 10, Pro at $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year, on-device processing), Whoop's US One, Peak and Life memberships, Apple's 9 September 2026 Series 12 and Ultra 4 Readiness announcement, and our Athlytic review and Whoop recovery guide.
