Gentler Streak is the app that tells you to go easier. Athlytic is the app that shows the day's exertion filling up. Both sit on an Apple Watch. Both can talk you out of a stupid Tuesday. They do it in opposite moods. Gentler won Apple's 2022 Watch App of the Year and a 2024 Design Award because the product feels like a coach who likes you. Athlytic feels like a compact Whoop screen drawn on the Watch you already own, for a lower yearly bill.
If Bevel was the app you were actually comparing, use Bevel vs Gentler Streak or Bevel vs Athlytic. The strap question is Athlytic vs Whoop.
Short verdict: Pick Gentler Streak if dashboards make you train angry and you want rest days treated as success. Pick Athlytic if you want Recovery as a percentage and Exertion 0 to 10 on a complication, and you will respect a target zone. Try both free. Pay for one.
Disclosure: Fitcoin is our product. We are not affiliated with Apple, Garmin, Whoop, Bevel, Athlytic, Livity, Gentler Streak or the other apps named here. Where Fitcoin appears, it is as a Sleep, Recovery and Energy companion that also scores workouts for partner rewards, not a PayPal cash-out app. Scores described below are wellness estimates for general fitness. They are not medical devices and they do not diagnose illness.
Gentler Streak: the rest-day app
Gentler Streak's public line is to move consistently, not constantly. It tracks activity, heart-rate zones, sleep duration, consistency and stages, and it lowers the ask around illness, injury or a holiday instead of demanding the same ring. Health data stays on the device in their privacy story, with no account required for the core loop. Premium unlocks the fuller readiness picture, deeper sleep analysis and the complete journal. The price we have been seeing on the US App Store is $8.99 a month or $39.99 a year, with lifetime offers that have started near $59.99 and family-sharing SKUs that move with the promotion. Confirm the listing. The free streak and widgets are already a product.
Athlytic: the exertion loop
Athlytic Recovery is sleeping HRV and sleeping resting heart rate against about 60 days of your own baseline, written as 0 to 100 percent. Exertion adds time above a personal heart-rate line, 0 to 10, including live on the Watch. The Target Exertion Zone is explicitly not the Move ring: going over is a caution, and sitting under it on a rest day is the feature. Pro is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year, with a short free history before the charts lock. The review is Athlytic. On-device processing and an App Store label of Data Not Collected are the privacy pitch. There is no cloud you can fall back on if you lose the phone and never exported.

Who should pick which
- Gentler if you have quit three cockpits because they made rest feel like failure. The Design Award is not the reason. The softer ask is.
- Athlytic if you already think in zones and you want the target on the wrist during the session, not a paragraph after.
- Bevel if you actually wanted five scores, food and Energy Bank. These two will both feel small.
- Whoop or a new Watch if the sensor was the question. Software cannot sample what the Watch left on the nightstand.
You can install both. You should not take orders from both before breakfast. A Gentler rest day next to an Athlytic zone that still has room is how people talk themselves into the session they were trying not to do. Pick the voice you will obey.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gentler Streak better than Athlytic?
Gentler Streak is better if you want an adaptive coach that treats rest as part of the plan. Athlytic is better if you want a Recovery percentage and a live Exertion score on the Watch. They are not two skins of one number.
Which is cheaper, Gentler Streak or Athlytic?
Athlytic Pro is listed at $29.99 a year. Gentler Streak Premium is listed at $39.99 a year, or $8.99 a month, and Gentler also sells lifetime unlocks that have started around $59.99 on promotion. Both have useful free tiers. Confirm the App Store before you budget.
Do Gentler Streak and Athlytic work without Apple Watch?
No. Both are built on Apple Watch samples in Apple Health. A phone-only archive will look empty. Neither is a Garmin, Oura or Whoop dashboard.
Which is closer to Whoop?
Athlytic. Recovery plus a daily exertion target is the Whoop shape, drawn from the Watch instead of a strap. Gentler Streak is closer to a coach who tells you to stop. If you wanted the strap itself, see Athlytic vs Whoop.

Prices move. Wellness estimates only, not medical advice.
