Sweatcoin is the one to open if you want move-to-earn with nothing to lose. STEPN is the one to open only if you already accept that a sneaker is an investment. Both still exist in 2026. Both can put a token or a marketplace credit next to a walk. They are not two prices of the same product. Sweatcoin is free, capped, and mostly a gift-card app with an optional crypto side door. STEPN and STEPN GO pay a game token for outdoor movement, inside an energy budget, and the interesting rewards sit behind an NFT sneaker.
The wider caution, including the lookalike apps that borrow the words workout crypto, is is workout crypto legit. The category essay is crypto fitness apps.
Short verdict: Pick Sweatcoin if the walk is already happening and you will not buy anything. Pick STEPN only with money you can lose, a sneaker you understand, and no plan that depends on the token price. If you wanted cash you can explain to a bank, neither is the best tool. WeWard-style gift cards are slower and clearer.
Disclosure: Fitcoin is our product. We are not affiliated with Sweatcoin, Sweat Economy, STEPN, Find Satoshi Lab, WeWard or any token project named here. Fitcoin is not a cryptocurrency. There is no wallet and no token. Where Fitcoin appears, it is as a rewards app that reads Apple Health or Health Connect and scores workouts for partner rewards. Nothing on this page is financial, investment or tax advice.
Sweatcoin: free points, optional token
Sweatcoin counts verified outdoor steps. The in-app unit is a sweatcoin, not a coin you can send to a friend. Our conversion note is about 1,000 verified steps for 0.95 sweatcoins after the fee, with free accounts capped near 10 sweatcoins a day. Indoor steps undercount. The balance spends in a marketplace of offers, auctions and donations. It does not withdraw to PayPal. A realistic redemption for someone who actually uses an offer is often 50 cents to $2 a month, which we break down in how much Sweatcoin pays and how many steps is 1 sweatcoin.
SWEAT is a second product. Link Sweat Wallet and steps can mint the token. That mint has been getting harder on purpose: about 1,000 steps per SWEAT at the September 2022 launch, and over 5,000 steps per SWEAT in the figures we last checked. The token then has to be sold on an exchange, into a market that has traded far below launch for most of its life. Sweatcoins and SWEAT are not the same balance. Spending one does not cash out the other.
STEPN and STEPN GO: energy, sneakers, game tokens
Original STEPN, from Find Satoshi Lab, made the category famous in 2022: buy an NFT sneaker, spend energy by walking or running outdoors, earn GST, and use GMT for higher-level upgrades. GST has an unlimited supply. GMT was minted with a 6 billion cap in March 2022. When new buyers stopped funding the reward pool, the daily income collapsed. The sneakers did not become free.
STEPN GO is the follow-up, and its own whitepaper is more specific than the TikTok version. Outdoor movement earns GGT, the GO game token, scaled by the sneaker's Efficiency attribute, until a daily earning cap. You choose one reward type per session. GMT earning inside STEPN GO is described as a later competitive system, the Schadenfreude Pool, not as the thing a casual walk prints. Karma and leaderboard rank sit on that pool. A common sneaker does not quietly pay rent.
The Haus lets someone lend a sneaker or energy, including short gift-bag trials. It is not a free salary. The host has to spend a minimum of their own energy or the Haus earnings are redirected. Trial users who never buy a sneaker can see locked GGT wiped when the code expires. Borrowing is a demo. Buying is the product. Marketplace prices move every day, so any 'sneakers cost $29' screenshot is a moment, not a rate. Open the market before you treat a payback period as a plan.
Side by side
| Sweatcoin / SWEAT | STEPN / STEPN GO | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to start | Free. Premium is optional and usually a bad trade | A sneaker, a loan, or a short trial. Market price moves |
| What a walk earns | Sweatcoins, plus optional SWEAT if the wallet is linked | GGT on STEPN GO, GST on the original. GMT is not the basic walk payout on GO |
| Daily limit | Free sweatcoin cap, and a rising SWEAT mint cost | Energy, then a daily GGT cap |
| Cash-out | Marketplace first. Token only if you sell SWEAT | Sell the game token. Price is the whole risk |
| Indoor gym | Weak. Outdoor steps verify | GPS movement. A treadmill is not the design |
| Failure mode | A balance you never redeem, or a token that drifts down | Entry cost larger than years of realistic rewards |
Follow the money, then decide
Sweatcoin's durable business is ads and marketplace offers. Your steps are the reason you open the app. The token is an optional extra with selling pressure built in, because walkers mint it and few people need to buy it. That is why we tell people to treat SWEAT as a lottery ticket, not a forecast. Anyone quoting a 2026 SWEAT price target is writing content.
STEPN's durable business is the sneaker economy: mints, repairs, upgrades, marketplace fees. Walking is how you participate. If the token you earn has to be sold to a later participant for you to 'profit', you are early only while a queue exists behind you. In 2026 that queue is smaller, the energy system is stricter, and the honest use is as a game you enjoy with money you can lose. It is not a side hustle you explain to a landlord.
Who should pick which
- Sweatcoin if you already walk outside, you will not buy Premium on a whim, and you are happy with a marketplace or a tiny token balance.
- STEPN GO if you understand NFTs, you have checked today's sneaker price yourself, and you would still walk if the token paid nothing for a month.
- Neither if the advert said salary, ticket, or guaranteed daily income. That listing is a different product. See workout crypto.
- A cash app if the point is money you can name. How much WeWard pays is the boring, better spreadsheet.
Frequently asked questions
Is STEPN better than Sweatcoin?
Only if you want a sneaker game and you can lose the entry cost. Sweatcoin is better for almost everyone else because it is free, the marketplace does not require a wallet, and the crypto route is optional. STEPN can pay a game token. It cannot honestly promise that the token will be worth more than the sneaker.
Does STEPN GO pay GMT for walking?
Not as the basic reward. STEPN GO's whitepaper says outdoor movement earns GGT, capped daily, based on Efficiency. GMT earning in STEPN GO is tied to the Schadenfreude Pool and leaderboard play, which the project scheduled as a later phase. Original STEPN is the app where GMT has the longer history.
Can I try STEPN without buying a sneaker?
Sometimes, through Haus lending or a gift-bag trial. Those trials are short, the host has conditions, and locked rewards can be wiped if you never buy. A trial is not proof the economy pays a wage.
Does Sweatcoin pay PayPal?
In-app sweatcoins do not cash out to PayPal. They spend in the marketplace. The separate SWEAT token can be sold on an exchange if you opt into Sweat Wallet. That is a crypto sale, with volatility, fees and possible tax, not a PayPal walking wage.
Method and sources: Written 21 September 2026 from STEPN GO's public whitepaper (GGT earning and daily cap, GMT via the Schadenfreude Pool, Haus lending and the host's 2-energy rule, GMT's March 2022 mint), our Sweatcoin review and step-conversion notes (about 1,000 steps per sweatcoin, SWEAT mint above 5,000 steps per token, marketplace value often $0.50 to $2 a month), and the September 2022 SWEAT launch history. We did not purchase a sneaker or sell a token for this comparison. Prices move. Not financial, investment or tax advice.
